My approach as a supervisor
Ethics for Talking Professions
Supervision is an ethical responsibility, providing a space for honest dialogue with a colleague who can help us identify what may otherwise remain unseen.
Through this process, we can recognise and address the ways in which illusion, delusion and collusion may enter our work, protecting the integrity of our practice and the interests of our clients.
Trainees
Supervision with trainees for me is a synthesis of coach, teacher, mentor and administrator, flexing to the changing individual needs of trainees as they progress.
This process promotes insight and professional growth, strengthens therapeutic practice, improves the quality of client care and contributes to the continuing development of the profession.
Qualified
Supervision furthers professional development acquiring not only new knowledge and skills but also sometimes, a prompt to unlearn. It provides an opportunity to recognise and examine any established patterns, question assumptions and interrupt familiar responses. In doing so, it creates space for new perspectives, approaches and possibilities to emerge.
Supervisory Philopshy
My preferred way of working with supervisees is contractual in style, e.g. what do you want from today? I am committed to personal straightforwardness, honesty and coherence. As therapists, we cannot sustain quality work alone, the supervision relationship ensures our capacity to work with the client’s concerns without being personally diminished.
